The Singapore Institute of Arbitrators’ annual and signature International Entry Course (IEC) is a comprehensive and substantial programme which consists of 4 modules and a Written Examination. These 4 modules cover the key aspects and fundamental concepts of arbitration; the differences between arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution; the differences between institutional and ad hoc arbitrations; the laws and rules applicable to an arbitration; the arbitration agreement; appointment of the arbitral tribunal; the jurisdiction, powers, rights and duties of the tribunal; challenges to the tribunal; the arbitration process and procedure; the award and its recognition and enforcement. Each module is taught by way of a lecture, followed by a tutorial. The Written Examination is a 2½ hour open-book examination which assesses candidates on their knowledge of the topics covered in the 4 modules.

The IEC 2019 was conducted over 2 days on 26 and 27 April 2019 and the Written Examination was held on 29 April 2019. There were 37 participants from various professions and disciplines who attended IEC 2019. Other than those who reside in Singapore, there were participants from Malaysia, Philippines, India and even one from the United Arab Emirates. The feedback from the participants on the course and faculty was extremely positive and gratifying.
The Course Director for IEC 2019 was Mr Chia Chor Leong and the Deputy Course Director was Mr Ramesh Selvaraj. The Institute thanks them for having conducted yet another successful IEC, as well as the Secretariat, led by Ms June Tan, who organized and administered the Course with admirable efficiency and competence. The Institute also acknowledges and thanks the teaching faculty for IEC 2019 which comprised lecturers and tutors Mr Chia Chor Leong, Ms Ho May Kim, Mr Samuel Chacko and Mr Shourav Lahiri, and tutors Mr Christopher Tan and Mr Daniel John.
