This involves t he balance between intuition and deduction, and the positive and negative i mpact on decision-making of “heuristics” – the mental shortcuts we all take , for example the “anchoring effect” – and resulting cognitive biases.The s econd part will focus on how counsel can use this research in strategizing how to present their clients’ cases more effectively in arbitration. Lucy joined the NUS Law Faculty in 2016 after retiring from the international firm Freshfields, where she led the i nternational arbitration group. She is active as an arbitrator, and is a Vi ce-President of SIAC and ICCA. Among other appointments, Lucy served as a C ommissioner on the Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission and Co-Director of th e Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland. While wit h the US State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser, she was the US Age nt to the Iran-US Claims Tribunal. Lucy speaks and writes regularly on inte rnational arbitration topics, and one of her most-cited articles remains Pr actical Guidelines for Interviewing, Selecting and Challenging Party-Appoin ted Arbitrators in International Commercial Arbitration (with Doak Bishop, 14 Arb.
