Singapore IP Strategy Series: IP-related International Arbitration – Advanced Issues (28 Jan 2021) LOCATION:Zoom Video Webinar Platform DESCRIPTION:About the Webinar:Intellectual property today forms a greater proportion of a company’s assets. According to some studies, intangible assets make up m ore than 80% of the market value of the S&P 500 in 2015, compared to 17 % 40 years ago. Top tech giants like Apple, Alibaba, Alphabet, Amazon, Face book, Microsoft and Tencent have a combined intangible asset value of appro ximately USD 5.1 trillion in 2019 Although IP disputes have traditionally b een litigated before courts, many international arbitrations today involve IP-related issues. In addition, with Singapore’s enactment of the Intellect ual Property (Dispute Resolution) Act in November 2019, a wider range of so -called pure IP disputes (such as disputes involving patents and trademarks ) are now arbitrable. We can therefore expect to see more cross-border IP-r elated disputes occurring and being subject to international arbitration. I n complex cases, such IP-related arbitrations could cover multiple jurisdic tions or markets, multiple parties (including third parties) and multiple a greements. IP-related arbitrations could also be impacted by regulatory law such competition or antitrust laws, investment laws and data protection la ws. Public international law arising from international investment treaties and free trade agreements containing IP protection provisions could also h ave an impact on IP disputes. This webinar will address a range of the abov e advanced issues. Webinar Programme:Webinar participants will be able to w atch and listen to (via computer audio, recommended for security reasons, o r telephone line) the video presentation and Q&A discussion on their sc reens, as well as participate in the Q&A discussion by sending in their questions to the moderator via text using the built-in Q&A function.5. 30– 5.40pmWelcome Remarks by SIArb President\nMr. Dinesh Dhillon - Partner, Allen & Gledhill LLP; President, SIArb5.40– 5.50pmIntroductions by Web inar Moderator\nMr. Yu-Jin Tay – Partner & Head, International Arbitrat ion (Asia), Mayer Brown LLP; Vice-President, Singapore Institute of Arbitra tors5.50– 7.00pmIP-related International Arbitration – Advanced Issues \nP anel presentations with moderated panel discussion and Q&A:\n\n - Mr. Y ew Kuin Cheah - Principal Counsel, Anti-Piracy – Digital Media, The Walt Di sney Company\n - Dr. Jean Ho – Associate Professor of Law, National Univers ity of Singapore\n - Dr. Stanley Lai SC – Partner & Head of of Intellec tual Property Practice, Allen & Gledhill LLP\n - Mr. Mark Lim - Directo r and Chief Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property Office of SingaporeAbout t he Panellists\n Mr. Cheah Yew Kuin is Principal Counsel, Anti-Piracy – Digi tal Media, The Walt Disney Company.
