February 2023 (Issue No.43)
the president's column

Happy Lunar New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai!  I hope everyone has had a great start to the year.
The weeks since our 40th year anniversary events in late November have raced by.  To those of you who joined us for the 15th RAIF Conference, our annual Commercial Arbitration Symposium, and our 40th Anniversary gala dinner, thank you for your resounding support.  There was a strong feeling of camaraderie that week among Singapore-based members and friends and we were reminded of our growing constituencies of international members.  It is a tremendous encouragement that so many of you travelled to Singapore to attend.

SIArb is the product of the cumulative efforts of its volunteers over the decades and has come a long way. This includes the outstanding work of our Secretariat team, led by June Tan, which has also made enduring contributions to our organisation for the recent third of its lifespan.  Our Secretariat has a tough job as it supports our ever growing committees of volunteers brimming with ideas.  They work tirelessly in the background and have helped our past and present Councils raise standards of our activities and events over the years.  During covid in particular, June and her team played a major role in ensuring that we continued to be able to deliver our annual training programmes in alternative formats and at a high standard.  Indeed, many of you have singled out June to me and others for praise and we should not forget the many less well known members of the team handling membership administration, finance, IT and marketing, whom we have also treated as part of the SIArb family.

As mentioned in the speeches at our 40th anniversary, SIArb expects to continue to pursue initiatives that seek to raise the value of association for our members.  We are committed to adding to and enhancing our...

SIArb "Beyond Arbitration: Global Perspectives" Lecture - Principle, Policy and Diplomacy in International Relations (6 September 2022)

Against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the United States-China relations and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the SIArb Beyond Lecture Series returned with a timely look at the topic of values and interests in International Relations on 6 September 2022. We were very privileged to have Mr Bilahari Kausikan, the current Chairman of the Middle East Institute and former diplomat, speak on the subject. The Institute’s President, Mr Tay Yu-Jin, chaired and moderated the lecture.

In an era of renewed major power competition, Mr Kausikan spoke on the vital importance of guarding against any foreign influence on public opinion especially...

Webinar Series: Focus on Energy Disputes - Part 2: Renewables (28 July 2022)

The Institute organised the second of its two-part webinar series on Energy Disputes on 28 July 2022. Whilst the first webinar back in June 2022 covered conventional oil & gas disputes, this webinar touched on potential disputes that may arise in the renewables sector. Given the global energy transition to renewable energy sources away from fossil fuels and a move toward clean energy technologies, there was understandably much interest amongst our members in the topics covered under this webinar. Substantial growth in renewable capacity amongst states have, in turn, necessitated substantial investment in...

SIArb Focus on Energy Disputes- Gas (21 June 2022)

SIArb’s webinar on the turmoil in the global gas markets, being the first of a two-part series focusing on the energy disputes, took place on 21 June 2022.

We had the pleasure of having an esteemed quartet involved as panellists for this webinar, with two economists and two senior legal practitioners, respectively Dr. Boaz Moselle and Luis Agosti (both from Compass Lexecon), and Dr. Johannes Willheim (of Jones Day) and Nick Lingard (of Freshfields, Bruckhaus Deringer), each of whom has had considerable experience...
