The Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb) is pleased to announce the 2026 edition of its Fellowship Assessment Course (“FAC” or “Course”) is now open for registration.
The FAC will focus on teaching candidates the practical aspects of acting as an arbitrator. To benefit from FAC, candidates should already have a sound grasp of the law of arbitration.
Course Synopsis:
This Course consists of 6 modules with a total of 9 self-study lectures, 6 live practical workshops and two written assessments:
- Module 1 will cover the basic concepts and principles on the sources of law, the law of contract, the law of tort, and the treatment of evidence. Candidates who have obtained a degree in law from a university or other tertiary institution recognised by the SIArb (or such other legal qualifications as the SIArb may in its absolute discretion accept) are exempted from Module 1 and Practical Workshop 1. All other candidates are required to attend Module 1 and attend Practical Workshop 1.
- Module 2 relates to (i) the acceptance of an arbitral appointment, covering topics such as conducting conflict checks and making disclosures before or when accepting an appointment; (ii) dealing with jurisdictional challenges; and (iii) emergency arbitrations.
- Module 3 covers (i) case management in conducting an arbitration; (ii) techniques for controlling time and costs in an arbitration; and (iii) drafting procedural orders.
- Module 4 covers (i) dealing with interlocutory applications; (ii) drafting discovery orders; (iii) dealing with costs of interlocutory applications; (iv) dealing with extension of time applications and guerilla tactics; and (v) dealing with preliminary issues.

- Finally, Module 6 covers the practical aspects of actually writing the Final
During the Practical Workshops, workshop leaders will address questions from candidates and show practical examples of an arbitrator’s work product such as procedural orders, Redfern Schedules, discovery orders and interim awards. Candidates will have an opportunity during Practical Workshop 6 to dissect a sample award to see how it should, or should not, be written.
Candidates will be required to complete two written assignments: (i) one overnight written assignment to be released after the end of the first workshop day, and (ii) the Award Writing Examination, during which candidates are to write an enforceable final award.
Criteria for Admission to FAC
- Lawyers or non-lawyers who have at least 10 years of involvement in litigation, arbitration or dispute resolution; OR
- Lawyers or non-lawyers who are or have been active arbitrators, and can provide documentary evidence of such experience; OR
- Those who have successfully completed the International Entry Course conducted by SIArb or such other equivalent course as may be recognised by SIArb; OR
- Those whom SIArb, at its absolute discretion and in the particular circumstances of the case, considers to be suitable candidates for the FAC.
Completion of the Course
To complete the FAC successfully, a candidate must:
- Achieve 100% attendance at all the Practical Workshops; and
- Pass the Award Writing
A candidate who has successfully completed the FAC may, subject to satisfying other relevant criteria, apply for admission as a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.
Combined Enrolment with Maritime Arbitrator Accreditation Programme (MAAP)
Candidates may also choose to enrol in both the MAAP and the Fellowship Assessment Course (FAC). Those registering for both programmes will enjoy a discounted registration fee. Candidates who successfully complete both the FAC and MAAP will be awarded the Certificate of Fellowship in Maritime Arbitration, jointly issued by SIArb and SCMA, and may also, subject to satisfying the relevant admission criteria, apply for admission as a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.
SIArb awards a prize for the best arbitral award written by a candidate in the FAC 2026.
The winner of the prize will be announced at SIArb’s Annual Dinner.

Attendance Policy:
Participants who wish to obtain CPD Points must comply strictly with the Attendance Policy set out in the CPD Guidelines. For this activity, participants are reminded to sign in on arrival and sign out at the conclusion of each day of the event in the manner required by the organiser. Participants must not be absent from each day of the event for more than 15 minutes. Participants who do not comply with the Attendance Policy on any particular day of the event will not be able to obtain CPD Points for that day.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
- For participants who are keen to utilise your Skills Future Credit, please inform Secretariat PRIOR to registration and making payment. Secretariat will inform you on the proper procedure to ensure that you can claim your credits successfully.
- For participants who would like to be exempted from Module 1, please proceed to select the correct category upon registration (Full Course with Module 1 Exemption) and complete payment. Secretariat will follow up with you on the supporting documents once your registration is received. If, we are ultimately unable to verify that you are eligible for an exemption, Secretariat will arrange for participant to top-up the difference
- For participants who choose ‘Online Award Writing Examination Only’, the onus will be on you to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the examination. We encourage you to review the course materials, watch the recorded lectures and spend time practising your award writing before sitting the assessment. If, after two attempts at the examination, you are still unsuccessful, the Course Director will review your circumstances on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the circumstances, the Course Director may require you to attend the in-person Module 6 workshop before permitting a further examination attempt.
