We are already at the midway point of 2019. SIArb has had an exciting year thus far and there is still more to come.
SIArb conducted its first ever joint arbitration training program in Tokyo with the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (“JCAA”). Chan Leng Sun SC and I were privileged to work with Furuta Yoshimasa, Yutaro Kawabata as co-trainers. The program was well received and we look forward to collaborating more with the JCAA in the future. We will continue to look for opportunities to export the Singapore brand of arbitration. We have in the past been part of a World Bank funded training program in Cambodia, a training program for a Russian delegation in Singapore, and a training program in Qatar.
The “Singapore” brand for dispute resolution will receive a major boost on 7 August 2019 when it will be amongst the first signatories of the United Nation’s “Singapore Convention on Mediation”. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), at its 73rd session in New York, passed a resolution to name the convention after “Singapore”. The signing ceremony for the Convention will be held in Singapore on 7 August 2019, a fitting celebratory event just prior to Singapore’s National Day on 9 August 2019. While we celebrate this achievement, it is also a worthwhile reminder of the high standards that will be expected of the Singapore brand of International Arbitration that we must all strive to always live up to and improve on. SIArb must remain committed to the highest of standards in our programs and initiatives.
Other events to mark down in your calendars include our upcoming Member’s Nite on 28 August 2019, the SIArb Commercial Arbitration Symposium on 26 Nov 2019 and our Annual Dinner on 27 November 2019. I look forward to seeing you there.
