SIArb Young Practitioners Network x Bar Spectre Drinks

June 25, 2024

On 25 June 2024, the SIArb Young Practitioners Network (“YPN”) hosted an informal, small group networking and drinks event, in collaboration with Bar Spectre. The event was targeted at bringing young arbitration practitioners below the age of 40 and/or with less than 10 years of arbitration experience, as well as those keen in starting a career in arbitration, together for a night of fun.

The event had more than 35 attendees, with not only lawyers, but also professionals from other industries, such as construction and consulting.
In line with Bar Spectre’s theme as a mental wellness bar, attendees were invited to perform Bar Spectre’s iconic “welcome ritual” before placing their drink orders. Everyone was each given a piece of flash paper and told to write down their concerns or stressors. It was subsequently burnt and the flash paper disappeared without ash. Some attendees described the “welcome ritual” as a cathartic experience, which allowed them to leave their worries from the office behind and be fully present during the event.

The YPN Committee’s co-chair, Ms Cathryn Neo, welcomed everyone and described exciting opportunities available for young practitioners, such as the SIArb YPN mentoring programme. Cathryn then proceeded to kick off a speed networking activity.
Attendees were each given a tag of a specific colour, with three different colours available. At the ring of the bartender’s bell, they were given seven minutes to engage with other attendees with a different coloured tag to share their ideas and experiences. At each ring of the bartender’s bell, attendees would acquaint themselves with other practitioners. The speed networking rounds helped to break the ice and allowed everyone to connect with as many other attendees as possible within a short span of time. Apart from name cards and LinkedIn connections, smiles and laughs were exchanged among all attendees over the course of the evening.

By the end of the event, it was clear that everyone left with a weight lifted off their shoulders and a wider smile.
