Further cementing the cooperation between SIArb and the Japan Association of Arbitrators (JAA), the two institutions conducted their first joint programme on International Commercial Arbitration in Tokyo on 20 and 21 May 2019. SIArb was represented by President Dinesh Dhillon and Immediate Past President Chan Leng Sun, SC. Yoshimata Furuta and Yoshihiro Takatori kindly contributed their time and knowledge to represent JAA on the faculty. Yutaro Kawabata of Nishimura & Asahi was tireless in organising the event and his firm generously provided the venue. The event was graciously opened by JAA President, Akira Kawamura. The programme covered the entire lifecycle of an arbitration. There was keen participation from the mix of Japanese and expatriate lawyers and corporate counsel attending, especially in the mock arbitration segment when the participants enthusiastically acted out the roles of witnesses and counsel.
