Synopsis.

The paper asks whether documents-only and fast-track arbitration should be part of main-stream arbitration and answers the question, Yes. It then considers the approach to be adopted in relation to such arbitrations and gives examples of the types of clause that should be included in any agreements for such arbitrations.

About the speaker:

T6mas Kennedy-Grant QC, a graduate of Oxford, is an experienced arbitrator, mediator and adjudicator. Qualified to practise in England and New Zealand, he has been in practice for 45years, 10 of them (1992- 2002) as a Master of the High Court of New Zealand. Since February 2002 he has practised full-time as an arbitrator, mediator and adjudicator. He became Queen's Counsel in 2005. He is a member of The Arbitration Chambers in Singapore He has been appointed in international arbitrations under the ICC, SIAC and UNCITRAL Rules as chairman or presiding arbitrator, party-appointed arbitrator and sole arbitrator. He is appointed regularly as sole arbitrator, mediator or adjudicator in New Zealand disputes. His principal areas are construction law, commercial law and dispute resolution. He is a member of 15 international arbitration panels and has lectured, tutored and written ex1ensively on the subject of dispute resolution, with papers published in Arbitration, Asian International Arbitration Journal, Construction Law Journal, the ICCA Yearbook, International Construction Law Review, New Zealand Business Law Quarterly, and New Zealand Law Journal. About the Chairman

Neale Gregson qualified as a lawyer in 1985 in the City of London and moved to Singapore in 1991. He holds Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Law from the Universities of Wales and London, respectively, and is a University Prizewinner. Neale qualified as one of the first Singapore-based Chartered Arbitrators in 2001 and is a Fellow and Panel Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (as well as being a Panel Member of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration and the Pacific International Arbitration Center in Vietnam). Having worked for many years as a Partner in international legal practice (during which time he served as head of a thriving litigation and arbitration department in a major offshore firm in Singapore, successfully represented various MNCs as Counsel in multi-million dollar arbitrations, and became recognised as one of the Asia-Pacific region's leading lawyers in the field of international dispute resolution), Neale joined The Arbitration Chambers, Singapore in July 2004 as a full-time professional arbitrator and mediator. He has conducted more than 50 arbitrations either as sole arbitrator or as a member of the arbitral tribunal, and has been appointed chairman or presiding arbitrator on numerous occasions. Neale has served as an adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore since 2003 where he teaches arbitration and other international law subjects. In addition, he leads both NUS's Graduate Certificate in International Arbitration (GCIA) and SIArb's Fellowship Assessment Course (FAC) as Course Director.
