David lewis, a barrister from 20 Essex Street, London, currently practising in Singapore in English law international arbitrations, will talk about recent developments in the English law of damages. In particular, he will focus upon possibly the most significant step in the law of remoteness in contract for 150 years, restitutionary damages, penalty clauses and loss of a chance.

About the speaker:

David Lewis specialises in advocacy and advisory work in a wide range of general commercial and private international law disputes. He appears in the High Court, Court of Appeal and House of Lords and before various arbitration tribunals (including LMAA, LME, LCIA, ICC and SIAC), as well as in mediations. Since 2005 he has been a CEDR Accredited Mediator. From October 2009, he has been based in Singapore, pursuing a practice predominantly in international arbitration, although he still accepts instructions to act in London (and elsewhere). Having commenced practice at 20 Essex Street in 2000, between September and December 2000 he worked as a Judicial Assistant to the Court of Appeal, Civil Division.

About the Chairman

Yee Leong has been practicing for 20 years. He heads the International Arbitration Practice Group in Rajah & Tann LLP and is concurrently the principal partner of Mis Kamilah & Chong in Malaysia. He was a partner at Jones Day, international law firm from 2003 to 2007 and headed the International Litigation and Arbitration Group in Singapore. He was the Deputy Head of the Projects and Infrastructure Practice Group at Rajah & Tann where he was a partner from 1995 until 2003 and concurrently served as a partner at Sakinah & Chong from 1997 to 1998. He was a partner at Wong Partnership in 1994. Yee Leong has extensive experience in international arbitration and litigation covering all aspects of commercial, energy and building disputes, with a focus on disputes arising from heavy civil engineering contracts, power, oil and gas, marine engineering, and land transport projects as well as professional negligence. He also advises on insolvency issues.
