About this Seminar:

This seminar is based on an interview given by the speaker, Michael Hwang SC, in London to Transnational Dispute Management (TDM), a well-known online arbitration journal. The interview was broadcast to all its subscribers, and was based on an essay written by the speaker on Corruption in Arbitration.

This talk will be preceded by a telecast of the 25-minute video interview. After the video screening, the speaker will discuss issues including:

  •  How party appointed arbitrators choose the presiding arbitrator
  •  How to execute a Chess Clock arbitration
  •  Factual witness conferencing.

About the Speaker:  

Michael Hwang S.C. currently practices as an international arbitrator and mediator. He also serves as the non-resident Chief Justice of the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts. He has two law degrees from Oxford University, to which he gained admission by an open scholarship examination. He has served as Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Singapore; Singapore’s Ambassador to Switzerland; President of the Law Society of Singapore; Vice-Chairman of the ICC International Court of Arbitration; Vice-President of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (“ICCA”); Court Member of the London Court of International Arbitration (“LCIA”); Adjunct Professor, National University of Singapore and Commissioner of the United Nations Compensation Commission (“UNCC”).  

About the Chairperson: 

Chan Leng Sun S.C. heads the Dispute Resolution practice in Baker & McKenzie.Wong & Leow and is Baker & McKenzie’s Asia Pacific Head of International Arbitration. He is qualified in Malaysia, Singapore and England. Leng Sun was appointed Senior Counsel in January 2011. Apart from being counsel, Leng Sun is an arbitrator and adjudicator on the panel of leading arbitral institutions. He is President of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb) and was Chairman of the Singapore Law Society ADR Committee. He serves on statutory tribunals such as the Income Tax Review Board and the Maintenance of Parents Tribunal. He is on the Advisory Panel of the Singapore Maritime Foundation. Leng Sun was a legal officer of the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva and a SIAC-CIAC Observer to the UNCITRAL Working Group on Arbitration. He has published widely in international journals and is the author of the book Singapore Law on Arbitral Awards.
