About this Seminar:-

Rian Matthews, a local principal with Baker & McKenzie.Wong & Leow, will compare areas of interest in contract law in Singapore and England, with emphasis on recent important pronouncements in the Supreme Courts of both the UK and the Singapore. The discussion will cover recent developments, and differences in approach, with respect to the enforceability of penalties, contractual construction (including implied terms), implied duties of good faith and damages.

About the Speaker:

Rian is a Local Principal in the Dispute Resolution team of Baker & McKenzie.Wong & Leow. Rian represents clients in a range of dispute resolution mechanisms, such as mediation, early neutral evaluation / adjudication, international arbitration (including under ICC, LCIA and SIAC arbitration rules), commercial litigation and other forms of ADR. Rian also advises clients in respect of regulatory, company law, and insolvency matters, and investigations.

Rian regularly works with clients across a range of sectors, including banking / finance, energy, mining and construction, and in matters involving cross-border and multijurisdictional issues. Rian is currently based in Singapore, but regularly works across the Asia-Pacific region. 

About the Chairperson:

Leslie Chew SC is a practicing lawyer of more than 26 years. After practicing at the Bar for 26 years, Leslie was appointed a District Judge in 2007 and Senior District Judge in 2009. After spending almost 7 years in the judiciary, he returned to private practice in May 2014. He was appointed a Senior Counsel in 2000.

He is a Professorial Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Legal Education where he is the Subject Coordinator and Examiner for the Law and Practice of Arbitration as part of the Bar Examinations. He is a Fellow of the Chartered and Singapore Institutes of Arbitrators. Leslie has sat both as a sole Arbitrator and as part of a tribunal in ICC, SIAC and ad hoc arbitrations both in Singapore and abroad. He is the author of the ‘Law and Practice of Arbitration in Singapore’ (LexisNexis, 2010). Leslie has also taught trial advocacy to the local Bar as well as lawyers in other jurisdictions for many years. He was one of the early Singapore lawyers to train with the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) in the USA. More recently, he was part of the faculty in the Singapore Advanced Advocacy Course 2014, which is modelled on the International Advanced Advocacy Course, Keeble College, Oxford.
